BOWLER SETS SERIES MARK FOR ROANOKE
Gary Thomas of Roanoke bowled the highest men's series ever in the Roanoke Valley on Saturday.Thomas, a 43-year-old right-hander in the Saturday Night Showdowners League, had games of 290, 277 and 250 for an 817 series at All-Star Lanes. He broke Bobby Hogan's record of 814.
"After I threw the first strike in the 10th frame [of the third game]," Thomas said, "I knew I was going to get it. After that, I knew I would get the last two."
Actually, Thomas had an inkling a special night was ahead after his 290 in the first game.
"I was hoping to go for it after that," Thomas said. "I buckled down and got the 277, and the last game I was relaxed and threw the ball the best I could."
