FOOTBALL-DESHAZO, FREEMAN SHINE FOR TECH
Quarterback Maurice DeShazo passed for 253 yards and three touchdowns and Antonio Freeman had four catches for 140 yards during Virginia Tech's scrimmage.DeShazo, of Martinsville, completed 16 of 25 passes and connected with split end Freeman on scoring plays covering 23 and 36 yards. He fired a 34-yard strike to flanker Steve Sanders.
Redshirt freshman tailback Tommy Edwards of Radford led all rushers with 73 yards on six carries. Edwards scored when he scooped a fumble out of the air and raced 32 yards for a touchdown.
End Bernard Basham of Roanoke had two quarterback sacks among his six tackles.
Tech concludes spring practice next Saturday in Lane Stadium with the annual Maroon-White game at 7 p.m.
Tailback Kevin Brooks led all rushers with 79 yards on 27 carries and one touchdown during Virginia's second spring scrimmage.
Quarterbacks Symmion Willis and B.J. Hawkins each threw a touchdown pass. Willis connected on a 67-yard pass to wide receiver Tyrone Davis, and Hawkins threw a 9-yard pass to Chris Harvey.
