TRACK-PH, FLEMING ATHLETES TOPS AT CROWE
Armenta Crosby of Patrick Henry was selected outstanding performer of the Dan Crowe Relays in Kingsport, Tenn., after she won the long jump and the 100-meter dash and ran the last legs of the winning 400- and 800-meter relay teams.Crosby leaped 16 feet, 10 inches in the long jump and ran the 100 in 11.5 seconds.
Shannon Martin, Deidre Trigg, Ursula Willis and Crosby set a meet record of 49.9 in the 400 relay. Martin, Cicely Manns, Willis and Crosby finished first in the 800 relay in 1:49.3. Trigg, Meredith Bowden, Demetria Mason and Love Pate captured first place in the 400 shuttle hurdle relay in 1:12.6.
Trigg won the 300 hurdles in 49.2 seconds and placed second in the triple jump. Amy Speas won the 3,200 in 12.37 and Martin finished second in the long jump.
Regina Johnson was named outstanding girls' field event performer after putting the shot 38-2.
Randy Burch was the only winner for the Patrick Henry boys. He finished first in the pole vault at 12 feet. Walter West, Floyd Lewis, Jamie Price and Rod Akers finished second in the 400- and 800-meter relays, and Adrian Moore was third in the 300-meter hurdles.
LeRoy Witt of William Fleming was picked the top male runner, finishing first in the 100 with a time of 10.6 seconds and competing and three winning relay teams.
Placing first for the Fleming boys was the 400 relay team of Witt, Clyde Lewis, Ernest Harrington and Paul Witt (43.7), the 800 relay team of Lewis, Harrington, Marvin Burris and Garfield Smith (1:33), and the 1,600 team of Martin, Burris, Lewis and LeRoy Witt.
In the girls' competition, the 1,600 relay team of Michelle Watson, Terrell Holland, Keyshia Anderson and Toni Jennings finished second (4:25) for Fleming. Watson also placed third in the 100 (12.7).
Keith Moyer won three events and Dan Giarla and Russ Lundstrom won two each as the Salem boys' team defeated Craig County, Glenvar and Shawsville at the Bradley Invitational in Salem. Moyer leaped 22 feet, 6 1/2 inches to win the long jump and ran the 100-meter dash in 10.7 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 22.9. Giarla threw the shot put 35-4 and the discus 108 feet. Lundstrom ran the 110-meter hurdles in 16 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles in 42.2.
Michele Brown and Amy Pitts each won two events to lead the Spartans' girls' team to victory. Brown won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. Pitts won the 100- and 300-meter hurdle events, and teamed with Megan Powers, Robin Arrington and Katie Saville to win the 1,600 relay.
Stephanie Brown of Shawsville and Kay Welford of Glenvar won two field events apiece. Brown won the long jump and triple jump. Welford putted the shot 27 feet, 4 inches and the discus 81-8.
Four Roanoke College runners placed in their heats at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C., including Carolyn Haller, who ran the 800 meters in 2:33 to finish third. Washington and Lee freshman Josephine Schaeffer won the 10,000 run against all Division I competition. Schaeffer's time of 38 minutes, 10 seconds also was an NCAA Division III provisional qualitying time.
Chris Seiben of the Virginia Tech men's outdoor team threw the javelin 188.1 feet Friday to place second. Three Hokies finished fourth in their respective events: Erin Graham in the 400-meter hurdles, Heidi Allen in the 3,000 meters and Nancy Gilmore in the discus.
