ALEXANDER EARNS TOP UVA AWARD
Cory Alexander received the Bill Gibson Cavalier of the Year Award at the annual University of Virginia men's basketball banquet at University Hall in Charlottesville.Alexander, a 6-foot-1 sophomore guard, led the 1992-93 Virginia team in scoring with an average of 18.8 points and a total of 144 assists. He joined Barry Parkhill and Othell Wilson as the only players in school history to lead the team in scoring and assists.
J.J. Durman shot a 76 to help Ferrum take a six-stroke lead over Randolph-Macon in the opening round of the 44th Intercollegiate State golf tournament, for Division II-III teams.
Ferrum, which posted a team score of 310, also had 77 each from Chris George and Stewart Smith over The Homestead's par-72 Lower Cascades Course in Hot Springs. Randolph-Macon had 316 and Longwood followed with 321. Defending champion Christopher Newport was fourth at 328. Durman led the tournament's 70 players in individual scoring. Glenn Prillaman of Roanoke College shot 77, and the Maroons were fifth as a team.
Marcus Kramer captured his 25th win of the season by defeating Old Dominion's Christian Dalzell 6-2, 6-2 as the Hokies men blanked the Monarchs 7-0 in Blacksburg. With a 25-9 record, Kramer is currently ranked 44th in the nation.
