INDIANS CUT DOWN BUCCANEERS 6-3
Pat Maxwent 3-for-3, scored twice and drove in two runs Saturday as the Kinston Indians rolled past the Salem Buccaneers 6-3 in a Carolina League baseball game at Granger Stadium.Tony Mitchell started off Kinston in the second inning when he walked, stole second and took third on a throwing error by catcher Tim Marx. Maxwell blooped a double down the left-field line, driving in Mitchell, before Mike Sued homered to left field for a 3-0 lead. After Salem pitcher Dave Doorneweerd walked John Cotton, Pete Rose Jr. singled to drive in Cotton and give Kinston a 4-0 lead.
Jon Farrell homered for the Bucs in the fourth inning after Kinston pitcher Julian Tavarez walked Michael Brown, trimming the lead to 4-2.
Salem earned its last run in the fifth. Tony Womack reached first on a bunt single and tried to steal second. He was caught in a rundown but allowed to return to first after he was hit with the ball. He took second on a wild pitch by Tavarez and went to third on Chance Sanford's single. Don Garvey brought Womack home with a grounder to the shortstop.
With two out in the bottom of the fifth, Kinston scored twice to seal the victory. Mitchell hit a pop fly but reached second when second baseman Sanford dropped the ball. Maxwell singled to left to drive in Mitchell. When Sued singled to right field, Maxwell reached third and scored when the ball got away from Garvey and rolled into the Kinston dugout.
Doorneweerd (0-1) pitched three innings for Salem, allowing six hits and four runs and striking out four. Michael Teich pitched two innings and allowed two hits and two runs. \
