FERRUM WINS STATE GOLF TOURNAMENT

Medalist Stuart Smith shot a 74 Sunday to lead Ferrum to its first Division II-III Intercollegiate State golf tournament title.

The Panthers finished with 310 both days at The Homestead's par-72 Lower Cascades Course. Ferrum's only challenge came from Longwood, which cut its opening round of 321 by 15 strokes Sunday to finish with a total of 627. Randolph-Macon was third with a total of 635.

Matt Jordan of Altavista shot a 77 for Ferrum, J.J. Derman had a 79 and R.J. Weaver an 80.

Smith, a former Cave Spring player, had a two-day total of 7-over par 151. Another former Cave Spring player, Shane Amburgey of Randolph-Macon, and Eric Levin of Longwood were the second-lowest at 153.

Roanoke finished fourth at 640, and defending champion Christopher Newport was fifth with a 643.

In other college sports:

At New Orleans, Tulane completed a three-game sweep of Virginia Tech, beating the Hokies 10-5 in baseball. Tech entered the weekend tied for the Metro Conference lead but dropped into a third-place tie with Southern Mississippi.

Dee Dalton, J.R. Hawkins, Blake Hedspeth and Popeye Smith each had two hits for the Hokies who are 19-7 overall and 3-3 in the Metro. Tulane is 13-19, 3-2.

Western Carolina hit five home runs to help the Catamounts to a 13-1 Southern Conference victory over VMI in Lexington.

VMI scored its only run in the ninth inning when Billy Terry, who reached base on a walk, scored on a ground out by David Groseclose. Western Carolina is 20-17, 13-5; VMI is 14-18, 4-10.
