BUCS TOP KINSTON 4-3, SPLIT OPENING SERIES

Salem first baseman Mike Brown hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning that helped the Buccaneers to a 4-3 Carolina League baseball victory over the Kinston Indians on Sunday.

Brown's homer, which tied the score at 3, was followed by back-to-back singles by designated hitter Joe Calder and third baseman Ken Bonifay. Shortstop Tony Womack then singled in the winning run to gain a split of the four-game, season-opening series.

Salem starter Esteban Loaiza pitched five innings, giving up three runs on seven hits. The left-hander walked three batters and struck out two. Relievers Jim Martin and Jason Christiansen combined to shut out the Indians in their final four at-bats.

Kinston starter Fernando Hernandez pitched five innings, holding Salem hitless in the first four.

Kinston took the lead with two runs in the first inning. John Cotton walked and Mark Charbonnet doubled to right. First baseman Chop Pough drove them in with a double to right-center field to make it 2-0.

Pete Rose Jr. made it 3-0 for the Indians with a leadoff home run in the third inning.

In the fifth inning, Bucs center fielder Jon Farrell coaxed a leadoff walk, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice fly by Bonifay. Second baseman Chance Sanford singled to right, driving in Farrell for Salem's first run.

The Buccaneers open their home schedule Tuesday against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Right-hander Mariano De los Santos is scheduled to pitch in the 7 p.m. start. \
