PRELIMINARY HEARINGS WAIVED ON BREAK-IN CHARGES
Charges against two former Radford High basketball players alleging their involvement in a break-in and theft were sent to the grand jury Monday after the pair waved preliminary hearings.
Christopher A. Hairston, 18, was charged in February with breaking into an apartment at Bergen Pines on Second Avenue. He also was charged with grand larceny of various items, including firearms, authorities said.
Monday, Hairston waived a preliminary hearing and General District Judge Ray Grubbs sent the charges on to the grand jury to consider for indictment.
Most of the items have been recovered, Commonwealth's Attorney Randal Duncan said in February.
Hairston, a stand-out basketball player for the Bobcats, was suspended from the team after his arrest. Brian A. Canaday, 19, a former Bobcat basketball player, also waived preliminary hearing on a grand larceny charge.
Desi D. Delaney, 18, pleaded guilty to receiving a Seiko watch stolen from the apartment. Grubbs imposed a 30-day jail sentence, which was suspended on the condition of Delaney's future good behavior.
In a separate case, Delaney also faces charges from last November of malicious wounding in connection with an assault and robbery of three people at an automatic teller machine on the Radford University campus. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 26.
