FISHBURN PARKWAY PARTLY REOPENED
One lane of the Fishburn Parkway has been opened to traffic, but it could be a month before the repairs are finished on the main access to Mill Mountain. The parkway was closed last month because heavy rainfall eroded the shoulder of the road.
No one lives along the section of the road that is being repaired, but it is the main access to the Mill Mountain Zoo.
Charles Huffine, city engineer, said signs have been erected alerting motorists to the repairs and one lane of traffic. He said flag men were used to help direct traffic this past weekend.
Motorists from Roanoke can reach the zoo by going south on U.S. 220 to the Blue Ridge Parkway interchange, and then travel south to the Mill Mountain Spur, which leads to the zoo and star.
Prospect Road, the old route up the mountain, was closed last year because an overhead bridge is unsafe.
