3,600 GALLONS OF FUEL SPILLED BY VANDALS
Vandals tied open nozzles for gasoline and diesel pumps at a state Department of Transportation building, causing a 3,600-gallon fuel leak, authorities said. The leak was discovered Saturday when a person using a nearby Dumpster noticed a fuel smell coming from the Transportation Department's Fancy Hill headquarters building, said Mike Henry, a manager with the department.
Nozzles for gasoline and diesel fuel pumps at the site had been tied open with baling twine and left on the ground, Henry said. He estimated the pumps were draining for six or seven hours.
The vandals apparently climbed a fence to get on the property, he said.
Most of the fuel was confined to the Transportation Department's property, Henry said.
Henry said state Water Control Board officials called to the scene Saturday told him there was no risk to drinking water supplies.
