BUENA VISTA MAYOR JACK BROCKENBROUGH DIES

Mayor M.J. "Jack" Brockenbrough, who was first elected to City Council in 1974, has died at the age of 64.

Brockenbrough, who died Saturday at Stonewall Jackson Hospital, had remained active in city government despite suffering from emphysema.

Brockenbrough was the top vote-getter in May's City Council election and was elected mayor July 1 after Harold Kidd, who declined to seek re-election, stepped down. Brockenbrough had served earlier terms as mayor in the late 1970s and the early 1980s.

Brockenbrough was a strong proponent of flood control projects for Buena Vista and was the lone City Council member to oppose a planned coal-fired cogeneration plant, a proposal that earlier this year was abandoned. - Associated Press
