BASEBALL-PASSED BALL SINKS GENERALS IN 11TH
At Bridgewater, a passed ball spelled disaster for Washington and Lee as Bridgewater rallied to win 8-7 in an 11-inning Old Dominion Athletic Conference game.W&L took a 7-6 lead in the top of the 11th on Duane Van Arsdale's RBI single.
In the bottom of the inning, Bridgewater loaded the bases with two outs against the Generals' Bates Brown. Greg Lipinski walked, forcing home the tying run, and the winning run then scored when a pitch got away from W&L catcher Mark Sappenfield.
Buck Gordon hit two home runs for the Eagles, and Preston Miller hit two homers for W&L (4-6 overall, 3-4 ODAC).
Brian Adams hit 3-for-4 and batted in two runs for VMI as the Keydets split a doubleheader with William and Mary at Patchin Field in Lexington.
VMI pulled in the first game with single runs in the first, second and fifth innings before getting insurance runs in the sixth. Louie Napoleon had two hits and one RBI as the Keydets won 5-1.
VMI (15-19) came back twice in the second game before losing 6-5 in 11 innings. Each team left the bases loaded at the end of the inning on three occasions, with the Tribe leaving a total of 15 runners stranded and the Keydets leaving 14. W&M (17-13-1) scored the winning run when Matt Bestick doubled to drive in Matt Drumeer.
At Radford, Erik Sauve had two home runs as Virginia Commonwealth beat Radford 11-7.
