BUSH DRAWS 1 PENSION; QUAYLE WAITS

I've been told that President Bush would get a pension not only for being president but also because he was vice president.

What kind of pension does he collect? Does he get Social Security? And what kind of pension does Dan Quayle get? K.V., Huddleston

President Bush, and the other four living ex-presidents, now receive $148,400 per year.

There are no add-ins for Social Security or their previous service in Congress, the military or other branches of the federal government.

That figure's from the National Taxpayers Union, a watchdog group in Washington.

Presidential pensions carry a cost-of-living allowance that goes up almost every year, so look for them to top $150,000 in 1994.

Ex-presidents also receive lifetime Secret Service protection, mailing privileges and allowances for staff and travel.

Dan Quayle, at 45, doesn't collect a pension. Based on his years in the Senate and as vice president, he'll be eligible for $54,276 per year when he turns 60, the taxpayers' union said. Final Four revise

Q: You had some bad information last week on the Final Four tickets. No one can just send money and get tickets. You have to mail an application form that goes into a drawing. D.C., Blacksburg

A: You're correct about the application form and drawing. The form is mandatory and should be accompanied by a check for $66 or $131, depending on whether you want one ticket or two.

Last week's error indicated the money could be mailed without the form. That was wrong.

The application form is obtained by writing 1994 Final Four Tickets, 6201 College Blvd., Overland Park, Kan. 66211-2422.

Also, you can call 900-646-1994 to get an application. It's due by April 30.

Chances of actually getting tickets are slim. Last year 131,000 applied but only 25,000 tickets were issued to the public. And that was for the Superdome in New Orleans, capacity 50,000.

Next year's Final Four will be in Charlotte, where the coliseum seats 23,000. Probably less than half of those seats will be sold to the public. Others go to groups, a major one being the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

A computer chooses the recipients in late May. In July the successful applicants will be notified by receiving tickets. Others will receive a refund check, according to an NCAA spokeswoman in Kansas City. Missed phone book

Q: How do you get a Roanoke Valley phone book if C&P's regular delivery misses you? How do you get an extra one if you have two or more phones? F.L., Roanoke

A: Call the company's business office, 954-6222. They can set up another delivery. That line's answered 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday, with shorter hours on Saturday.
