PGA BACKS OFF STANCE ON GROOVES

Square groove clubs will continue to be allowed on the pro golf tour under terms of an out-of-court settlement reached Wednesday.

The PGA Tour withdrew its ban on tournament use of the clubs made by the Karsten Manufacturing Corp.

The settlement, announced jointly by the tour in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and Hilton Head Island, S.C., and by Karsten Manufacturing in Phoenix, ended a legal wrangle that began in 1989.

A $100 million suit by Karsten in Phoenix, and a $100 million counter-suit by the PGA Tour in Florida were withdrawn and, according to tour deputy commissioner Tim Finchem, "dismissed with prejudice, meaning they cannot be entered again."
