LORD BOTETOURT BLASTS RADFORD 8-0 IN BASEBALL

Lord Botetourt battered Radford 8-0 in a non-district baseball game Wednesday on the shutout pitching of Keith Shupe, who was making his first start.

Shupe fired a four-hitter and struck out six for the Cavaliers (3-1). He got hitting support from Adrian Michalski and Brian Davis, each with two hits. Davis also knocked in two runs. Radford (0-4) was led by Derrick Englehard with a pair of singles.

In other baseball:

At Floyd, the Buffaloes eased by Auburn 5-4 as Josh Howery laid down a two-strike, one-out squeeze bunt to score Monty Moran with the winning run in the seventh inning. The game didn't count in the district race but featured two Mountain Empire District rivals. Winning pitcher Phillip Marshall allowed just four hits and struck out eight. Auburn's Todd Collins drove in two runs with a fourth-inning single.

At Pearisburg, Whitey Blankenship's two-run home run was a key blow in Narrows' 17-3 victory over Giles in a five-inning game that also did not count in the MED standings.

At Blacksburg on Tuesday, shortstop Brian Davis had a home run, triple and four RBI as the Indians (2-4) ripped Graham 18-7. Michael Donohue, who drove in two runs, also had three hits.

\ BOYS' TRACK: At Radford, Floyd County's David Gorsky won the mile (four minutes, 58 seconds) and two-mile (11:03) runs to help Floyd win a four-team meet. Floyd had 93 points, Radford 55, William Byrd 41 and Auburn 33.

At Northside, Christiansburg's Devon Lewis won four events and led the Demons to a boys' track victory over Northside, 72-63. Lewis won the long jump (20 feet, four inches), the high jump (5-10), the 110-meter hurdles (15.7 seconds) and the 300 hurdles (42.6).

At Shawsville, Steven Johnson led Giles to a boys' track victory over Narrows, Shawsville and Fort Chiswell. Johnson won the long jump (18-9), the triple jump (41-8 1/2), high jump (6-0), 100-meter dash (11.7) and 200-meter dash (24.0). Giles had 135 1/2 points, Narrows 46 1/2, Shawsville 25 and Fort Chiswell 21.

\ GIRLS' TRACK: At Radford, Jadean Curtis won four events and finished second in another but couldn't help the Bobcats win a four-team meet. Floyd County prevailed with 90 1/2 points, Radford had 70, William Byrd 41 1/2 and Auburn 24. Curtis won the long jump (15-2), high jump (4-10), triple jump (32-8) and 100-meter hurdles (17.2).

At Northside, Christiansburg's Bethany Eigel won two events as the Demons beat Northside 89-38. Eigel won the 400-meter run (65.1 seconds) and the 800-meters (2:34.4).

At Shawsville, the Giles girls rolled to victory with 154 points to Shawsville's 38, Narrows' 24 and Fort Chiswell's 14. Giles' Shannon Dillon won the shot put (30-9) and the mile run (6:35). Shawsville's Sherri Brown won the long jump (15-2 1/4), triple jump (31-7) and high jump (4-9).

\ SOFTBALL: At Hillsville, Carroll County (2-2) scored 51 runs to sweep a non-district doubleheader from Craig County by scores of 34-4 and 17-1. In the opener, Laura Marsh had three hits in three trips to drive in five runs and allowed three hits to pick up the win. In the second game, Becky Quessenberry pitched a no-hitter while Abby Johnson hit a grand slam.
