LORD BOTETOURT BLASTS RADFORD 8-0 IN BASEBALL

Lord Botetourt battered Radford 8-0 in a non-district baseball game Wednesday on the shutout pitching of Keith Shupe, who was making his first start.

Shupe fired a four-hitter and struck out six for the Cavaliers (3-1). Brian Davis, who drove in two runs, and Adrian Michalski each had two hits. Radford is 0-4.

\ BOYS' TRACK: At Northside, freshman Dee Shovely won the 400-meter run (54.2 seconds) and the 200 (23.6) but Christiansburg proved too strong for the Vikings 72-63.

At Radford, Floyd County's David Gorsky won the mile (4:58) and two-mile (11:03) runs to help Floyd win a four-team meet. Floyd had 93 points, Radford 55, William Byrd 41 and Auburn 33.

\ GIRLS' TRACK: At Radford, Jadean Curtis won four events and finished second in another but couldn't help the Bobcats win a four-team meet. Floyd County prevailed with 90 1/2 points, Radford had 70, William Byrd 41 1/2 and Auburn 24.

At Northside, Christiansburg's Bethany Eigel won two events as the Demons beat Northside 89-38. Eigel won the 400-meter run (65.1 seconds) and the 800-meters (2:34.4).

\ SOFTBALL: At Hillsville, Carroll County (2-2) scored 51 runs to sweep a non-district doubleheader from Craig County by scores of 34-4 and 17-1. In the opener, Laura Marsh had three hits in three trips to drive in five runs and allowed three hits to pick up the win. In the second game, Becky Quessenberry pitched a no-hitter while Abby Johnson hit a grand slam.

At Northside, William Byrd (4-0, 1-0) beat the Vikings (1-2, 0-1) 10-0 in the Blue Ridge District opener for both teams as D.D. Aldrich got the win for the Terriers on a one-hitter. Mandy McCalloch homered with two runners on base to lead Byrd's offense.

At Shell Memorial Park, Cave Spring (3-2) battered G.W. Danville 13-2 in a non-district game as Shannon Smithson drove in two runs with two hits and Leah Daigle also had two hits with an RBI. Jennie Kallio allowed just one hit and struck out 13 to record the victory.

At Buchanan, Sherry Allison (4-0) pitched a five-inning no-hitter to help James River sweep Rockbridge County in a softball doubleheader, 8-0 and 27-15. In the second game, Amber Vines was 3-for-5 with three RBI and Melissa Markham was 3-for-3 with four RBI as James River (5-0) collected 20 hits.

\ GOLF: At Roanoke Country Club, Tyler Pugh and Lee Shirley were co-medalists with two-over par 38s as North Cross defeated Roanoke Catholic 163-204 in a Virginia Independent Conference match.

\ LACROSSE: In Vinton, David McDade scored twice as Cave Spring beat Vinton 4-3. Denny Barbour and B.R. Sinclair had the other goals for Cave Spring (2-1). Vinton is 0-1.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Daleville, Lord Botetourt defeated Alleghany 6-0 in a Blue Ridge District match. The Cavaliers (4-1, 3-1) took 55 shots and got goals from six players. Alleghany is 0-4, 0-2.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: At Cave Spring, Chanda Ingram's four goals propelled the Knights to a 6-1 victory over North Cross. Tiffany Jackson and Gayle Griffin had the other goals for Cave Spring (2-0). Emily Cook scored for North Cross (0-3).
