PENGUINS' STREAK ENDS AT 17

The NHL's longest winning streak ended at 17 games as the Pittsburgh Penguins settled for a 6-6 tie with the New Jersey Devils on a late goal by Joe Mullen on Wednesday night.

Mullen's 33rd goal came with 66 seconds left in the third period of the final regular-season game for the two-time Stanley Cup champions. The Penguins had pulled goalie Tom Barrasso for a sixth skater.

Mario Lemieux, who scored two goals, sent the puck behind the net to Jaromir Jagr and he found Mullen all alone to the left of goalie Craig Billington for a shot.

Both teams had excellent chances to win in the overtime, with Barrasso stopping Ken Daneyko from point-blank range with 1:15 left, and Jagr sliding a puck under Billington through the crease and defenseman Mike Ramsey missing the net on a last-second shot from the left faceoff circle.

The tie was the Penguins' first non-winning effort since a 3-1 loss to the New York Rangers on March 5. Their 17-game winning streak was two more than the New York Islanders' previous NHL record.

The tie also prevented New Jersey from clinching third place in the Patrick Division. That will be decided Friday, when New Jersey plays at the Islanders, who need to win to clinch third place and avoid an opening-round playoff matchup against the Penguins.
