Allied-Signal, unions discuss new contract

CHESTER - Negotiators for Allied-Signal Inc. and five labor unions met to discuss a new contract for the company's chemical plant in Hopewell. A three-year contract covering about 350 hourly workers, expires at midnight tonight.

Both sides worked Tuesday to avert a walkout by union members, which would put both of Allied-Signal's Richmond-area plants on strike.

Members of Teamsters Local 101 walked out March 22 after negotiations broke down, putting about 1,800 hourly employees out of work at Allied-Signal's fibers plant in Chesterfield County. The Chesterfield plant has been operated by 950 salaried and administrative employees. - Associated Press
