STROM THURMOND'S DAUGHTER DIES AFTER BEING HIT BY CAR

U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond's daughter died Wednesday from injuries caused when a car struck her as she was crossing the street.

Nancy Moore Thurmond, 22, suffered massive head injuries, internal bleeding and multiple internal injuries, said Chris Simpson, a family spokesman. She died at Richland Memorial Hospital.

Thurmond was hit as she crossed a street in the city's Five Points neighborhood Tuesday evening, police said.

Police were considering charges against the driver, whose name was not released, said city spokeswoman Gwen Foushee.

Thurmond; his wife, Nancy, from whom he is separated; and all three of the couple's younger children were at the hospital, said hospital spokesman Andrew Mills.

The family issued a statement thanking people for their concern and prayers. President Clinton, Vice President Al Gore and other national leaders called Thurmond to express their concern, Simpson said.

Nancy Thurmond was a criminal-justice major at the University of South Carolina and had applied to attend law school, according to her roommate, Gina Crow. She also was a contestant in the Miss South Carolina pageant.

Crow said Thurmond had left their apartment to go to a drugstore shortly before the accident.

Funeral arrangements were pending.
