BYRD'S BARRY TRENT NAMED COACH OF YEAR

Barry Trent of William Byrd has been named coach of the year for schools served by the Roanoke Valley Wrestling Officials Association.

Trent has been coaching at Byrd since 1978 and has won many titles, including the state championship in 1982. He also wrestled at Byrd and was a member of the state championship teams in 1973 and 1974 when he was a 132-pound state champion.

Five Roanoke Metro coaches were honored as the top coaches in their respective districts. The awards went to:

Paul Barrell of Woodrow Wilson Middle School, Roanoke Middle Schools; David Schuyler of Northside Junior High, Roanoke County Middle Schools; Roger Lovern, Salem High, Blue Ridge District; Kris Kahila, Franklin County, Roanoke Valley District; and Rod Corl, Botetourt Intermediate, Middle School League.

The three other coaches honored are Mike Craft, Parry McCluer, Piedmont District; Mark Gammon, Patrick County, Piedmont District; and Dean Underwood, Christiansburg, New River District.

The awards are based 50 percent on sportsmanship and 50 percent on achievement and ability.

A special award also went to Ron Childress for his contributions to the sport. Childress, a former wrestler, coach and official, now is in wrestling promotions. All awards were made at the association's recent annual banquet.

Dr. Larry Hall is the association commissioner. Serving with him on the executive board are Mike Winston, Rick Schilling, Stan Parker, Pete Ninton and Childress. The association serves 45 schools in the Roanoke Valley.
