DOG DAYS ON WAY
Dogs and judges will have to be on their best behavior this weekend at the New River Valley Kennel Club's Dog Show and Obedience Trial Match. On Saturday, eight American Kennel Club-licensed dog-show judges will take lessons from the dogs during the match at Virginia Tech's Lane Stadium.
The turnabout is designed to give the judges a chance to test their canine breed knowledge and judging skills by working with breeds for which they are not yet licensed by the American Kennel Club.
Using actual show rings adds a touch of realism to the training. Typically, only one or two judges handle a match.
On Sunday, judges will resume their normal status for the fifth annual New River Valley show. More than 600 dogs, along with their owners and handlers, are expected for the weekend competition.
General admission is $2. Virginia Tech students and children under 12 will be admitted for $1. Children under 6 will be admitted free.
Judging Saturday begins at 10:30 a.m.
Sunday's show, co-sponsored by the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, begins at 9 a.m.
Group judging starts at 2:30 p.m., followed by the best-in-show competition.
The student chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association will sponsor a dog-identification tattoo clinic during the show. To make an appointment, call 552-8315.
