CLOWNIN': The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus will open Thursday night at 7:30 at the Roanoke Civic Center, and it will continue through April 25.Stellar attractions include the Amazing Mongolians, with a brigade of horsemen, women contortionists, one of the world's strongest men and members of the Mongolian National Folk Dance Troupe.
Additional shows will be April 23 at 7:30, April 24 at 3 and 7:30 and April 25 at 1:30 and 5:30. Tickets are $7.50, $9.50, $11.50, plus ringside seats for $15. Thursday night is Family Night, which means $3 off on all tickets. And they can get in for $2 off for the 3 p.m. show on April 24.

\ STAGED: "God's Trombones," a celebration of gospel music, old-time black church preaching and theater, will be presented Saturday night at 7:30 at Augusta Street Methodist Church in Staunton.
The production is from ShenanArts, which first presented the famed work by James Weldon Johnson in 1988. It will be repeated April 24 at First Baptist Church of Waynesboro and April 30 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Staunton.
Show time for each performance is 7:30. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for people under age 17. For more information, call 248-1868.
"Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?," the scorching play by Edward Albee, opens tonight at 8 at Showtimers Studio in Roanoke. It continues through Sunday, and Wednesday through April 28. Shows are at 8 except on Sundays, when they are at 3.

\ GROWING: The Franklin County Spring Arts and Crafts Fair wil be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at a new location, Franklin County High School in Rocky Mount. Admission is $1, except for kids under 12, who get in free. Call 483-9542.
\ PLUCKY GUYS: Radin Zenkl, a mandolin master, will play Wednesday night at 8 at the Lenfest Center of Washington and Lee University in Lexington. His arsenal includes mandolin, mandola, mandocello, mandolin banjo and other weapons. His music touches on jazz, new age, bluegrass, flamenco, eastern European and classical. Admission to the concert is free, thanks to the W&L Campus Catholic Ministry.
And don't forget, John McCutcheon, the folk singer and instrumentalist par excellence, will play and sing and tell stories at Whitman Auditorium of Virginia Western Community College on Thursday night at 8. Laura Pole and Greg Trafidlo will open the show. Tickets are $5. Call 857-7334.
