FLOYD COUNTY WINS WILD ONE OVER GALAX

Mike Hylton and Charles Blackwell had three hits apiece, pacing Floyd County to a 17-14 baseball victory over host Galax in a wild Mountain Empire District game Thursday.

The Buffaloes led 11-4 before the Maroon Tide rallied. Galax, which was paced by Chris White's 3-for-5 performance, left the tying runners on base in its final at-bat.

Hylton was 3-for-5 with three doubles, while Blackwell was 3-for-4.

Steve Ford had two hits for Galax.

In other baseball:

Bradley Hudgins fired a five-inning no-hitter and Geral Reed knocked in five runs to lead visiting Auburn to an 18-0 rout of Rocky Gap in a Mountain Empire District game.

Hudgins, who no-hit the Eagles last year, struck out 12 of 15 batters in a game that ended after five innings with the 10-run slaughter rule in effect. Reed's 3-for-3 day at the plate was highlighted by a home run. Todd Collins added four RBI for the winners.

Salem traveled to Glenvar and romped past the Highlanders 10-2 on Ryan Blevins' four-hitter. He also went 2-for-4 with triple at the plate. Also for Salem (4-2), Charlie Hammersley was 2-for-3 and scored three runs, Tommy Lee was 3-for-4 with three RBI and Brian Monroe was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Glenvar is 0-3-1.

At William Fleming, the Colonels committed 11 errors and fell to E.C. Glass 11-5. David Henderson pitched six innings and earned the win for the Hilltoppers. For Fleming, Marvin Brown and Brian Dillard each had two hits.

At North Cross, pitcher Aaron Lange had three hits, including a homer, and three RBI as the Raiders earned a doubleheader split with a 7-6 win over Hargrave in the second game. Hargrave (6-1) won the first game 8-5 on the strength of a seven-run third inning. Jason Davis had four hits on the day for North Cross (4-4).

\ SOFTBALL: At Glenvar, Bobbie Jo Wright and Kim Martin combined on a one-hitter as Glenvar ripped winless Bath County 25-0 in a Pioneer District game. Amy Vonderhofen was 2-for-4 with four RBI for Glenvar (2-3 overall, 2-0 district). Bath County is 0-3, 0-2.

Lori Simmons' run-producing triple highlighted Heritage's 15-4 romp over host William Fleming. Donna Perkins and Angie Ellis tripled for the Colonels (0-4). Heritage is 3-1.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Chris Evans scored two goals to pace visiting Blacksburg to a 6-0 romp over Salem. Chris Tyson had a goal and an assist for the Indians, who outshot the Spartans 19-2.

Danny Rowland broke a 1-1 tie with the winning goal late in the first half as Roanoke Catholic edged Lord Botetourt 2-1 in a match at River's Edge.

Charles Cunningham also scored for the Celtics and Kris Keeton scored for the Cavaliers, who outshot Roanoke Catholic 19-10.

Both goalies played well in the strong wind: Botetourt's John Critzer made seven saves and the Celtics' Mike Kolnok had 15.

At Woodstock, George Vogel scored two goals and John Logan anchored a North Cross defense that stymied Massanutten Military Academy in a 9-0 Raiders win. North Cross improved to 5-0-1 overall and 2-0 in the Virginia Independent Conference.
