DAWSON JOINS 400 HR CLUB
Andre Dawson became the 25th player to hit 400 major league homers with a shot over the left field wall in the second inning of the Boston Red Sox's 4-3 13-inning victory Thursday night over the Cleveland Indians in Boston.Dawson broke a tie with Al Kaline and is seven homers behind Duke Snider, in 24th place. Dawson is the 16th player with 400 homers and 2,500 hits. The homer was his 2,515th hit, 68th on the career list. Dawson, signed as a free agent after 16 years with the Montreal Expos and Chicago Cubs, hit his first homer of the year leading off the second on a 1-1 pitch by Jose Mesa.
Jeff Richardson, a backup infielder acquired three days before the season, doubled home the winning run in the 13th. Boston, which finished in the AL East cellar last year, is off to its best start in 41 years at 7-2.
