TWISTER GRABS TREES, ROOFS IN FAUQUIER

A spring storm damaged several buildings Friday in Fauquier County and caused moderate flooding in parts of Western Virginia.

Witnesses told Fauquier County authorities that a tornado ripped the roof off an 18th-century home and damaged several other houses and the only business in Paris at about 8:40 a.m. They said the twister also uprooted trees as it moved northeast.

The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado packing winds from 75 to 90 mph touched down at Paris. The tornado's path along the ground was about a mile long, said Barbara McNought, a weather service meteorologist who surveyed the damage.

In Highland County on Virginia's western border, eight roads were closed Friday morning because of flooding, said Harold Newman of the state Transportation Department office there. Virginia 635 remained closed Friday afternoon. - Associated Press
