BEDFORD MAN IS KILLED IN ACCIDENT ON VA. 24

A 23-year-old Pittsylvania County man plowed into a parked car in Bedford County and killed one of its occupants.

Bradley Douglas Callahan of Hurt, who was on his way to Thursday night's Guns N' Roses concert in Roanoke, was charged with driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. State police said more serious charges could be forthcoming.

He was driving west on Virginia 24 toward Roanoke around 6:30 p.m. with Chuck Newman, also 23, of Altavista, and Sarah Hille, 17, of Hurt, when he lost control of his pickup truck, ran off the left side of the road and struck a car parked outside Jim's Country Store at the corner of Virginia 24 and Virginia 608.

David McKinley Weeks, 39, of Goodview, was killed. Weeks was sitting in the car with his wife, Sandra Weeks, 33, and their 4-year-old daughter, Madeline.

Weeks was pronounced dead about an hour later, after being flown by helicopter to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. His wife was listed in serious condition Friday night in the hospital's intensive care unit. Their daughter was treated for minor injuries and released to family members.

Callahan, Newman and Hille were not seriously injured.

Callahan, an unemployed heating and air-conditioning mechanic, was arrested and taken to Bedford County Jail. He has been released on $2,500 bond.
