BOTH TECH TEAMS ADVANCE
The Virginia Tech men and women both won matches in the opening round at the Metro Conference tennis tournament Friday in Blacksburg.The men defeated UNC Charlotte 7-0 and the women downed Louisville 6-3.
Tech's men did not lose a set as they overwhelmed the 49ers. They face South Florida in a semifinal match today.
In other men's matches, Southern Mississippi defeated Louisville 4-2. The Golden Eagles play top-seeded Virginia Commonwealth in the semifinals. The Rams had a first-round bye.
Jen Dinello and Cathy Dixon led the Hokies' women's team as the partners won two singles matches and a doubles match. The women meet top-seeded South Florida in the semifinals today.
In other women's action, Virginia Commonwealth defeated Southern Mississippi 6-0 to advance to a semifinal match against Tulane. The Green Wave rolled over UNC-Charlotte 5-0.
\ BIG SOUTH: Radford men's tennis team is in fourth place and the women's team is third after the second day of the Big South Tennis Championship at Charleston, S.C.
Rachid Benjelloun and Mourad Fahim won matches for the men's team. Benjelloun defeated Rapheal Cardoso of Liberty 6-2, 6-2. Fahim defeated Jeff Kopelman of UNC-Greensboro 6-2, 6-4.
Elise Dondero and Allyson Beckman won matches for Lady Highlanders. Dondero defeated Marty Washington of Charleston Southern 6-0, 6-1. Beckman defeated Kay Pearl of Maryland-Baltimore County 6-0, 6-3.
UNC Greensboro is leading the men's competition with 70 points, followed by Coastal Carolina with 67. The Highlanders have 52. Campbell is leading the women's tourney with 81 points, followed by Winthrop at 77 and Radford with 53.
