PIT BULL OWNER GUILTY OF USING DOG IN ASSAULT

Berace Bennett was chased by three men and a pit bull down the street, so he climbed to what he thought was safety on the roof of a car.

When the attackers couldn't tear Bennett off, prosecutor Dennis Duncan said, "they picked the dog up and threw it on the roof." The animal mauled Bennett, who subsequently was treated at a hospital and released.

Thursday, more than a year after the April 1, 1992 attack, Circuit Judge Warren J. Stephens found Gary Donnell Hill, 21, of Newport News, guilty of using the pit bull to assault Bennett. Hill is to be sentenced May 28. He could get up to 20 years in prison.

The dog's sentence was more severe. City authorities kept it under observation to make sure it didn't have rabies, then killed it. - Associated Press
