SC AGREES TO A SPRING FESTIVAL
The Southern Conference has verbally agreed to consolidate all postseason tournaments for spring sports into an Olympic-type event in Chattanooga, Tenn."The league membership has agreed to this in principle," Geoff Cabe, the conference's assistant commissioner, told the Johnson City (Tenn.) Press.
He said the conference's athletic directors and executive committee will vote on the proposal during spring meetings in Myrtle Beach, S.C., next month.
"There are some details to be worked out, but we already have enough votes, I think," Cabe said.
Merrill Eckstein, president of the Greater Chattanooga Sports and Events Committee, said the city and the conference have a verbal two-year agreement with an option for a third year.
"We don't think that any other major college conference has done this before," Eckstein said.
The event could begin in April 1994. Cabe said it likely would last three or four days. The sports involved would be men's and women's tennis, golf and track, and women's softball.
Men's baseball is under contract to play in Charleston, S.C., through 1996, Cabe said.
