WYTHEVILLE POWER OUTAGE AFFECTS 2,500
About 2,500 Appalachian Power Co. customers in half the town of Wytheville lost power for about eight hours until early Friday.A regulator at the Apco substation on Chapman Road caught fire shortly before 10 p.m., possibly from lightning during a storm Thursday night.
Power was restored shortly before 6 a.m. Friday.
Wytheville firefighters had to extinguish the blaze before repairs could be made.
John Wilson, manager of the Wytheville Ramada Inn, apologized to people attending the annual New River Symposium held at the motel for not having hot water Friday morning.
"I know I can't start my day without a shower and a hot cup of coffee, and I know it must've been inconvenient for you," he told the group.
The motel allowed late checkouts for those leaving Friday so they could return to their rooms for showers first. - Southwest bureau
