More than 1,000 spectators turned out for a rematch of last year's Division III men's lacrosse championship game as Nazareth defeated Roanoke 17-13 on Saturday.Nazareth won the championship 22-11 last year.
Nazareth jumped to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter, but Brett Smith rallied his teammates and led the Maroons on a 5-0 scoring drive. The score was 8-8 at halftime.
Nazareth scored three quick goals at the beginning of the third period to lead 11-8 and put Roanoke behind for good.
"It was a very even game between two very strong lacrosse teams," Roanoke coach Bill Pilat said. "I think their goalie played well."
Nazareth had 21 saves for the game; Roanoke had 12.
The Maroons were hindered by penalties, racking up 10. Nazareth had five.
"Our team played well in spurts," Pilat said. "We just need to play for 60 minutes. We can play with any team if we do that."
Smith led the Maroons in scoring with three goals and one assist. Dave Tollock had two goals and two assists, Bart Zimmerman scored two goals and Colin McGaren had one goal and an assist. Mark Benedetto, Aaron Simms, James Cammerman, Jay Blatt each scored one goal.
"They were the third best team in the country and we were the fourth best, and I think that kind of held true today," Pilat said.
