SIGMON STAYS ON TOP AT FCS

Now that Rick Sigmon finally has reached the top, he's showing signs that he wants to stay there.

Sigmon fought off Salem's Dicky Wilson (at the beginning) and Rustburg's Dudley Lawhorn (at the end) to win the 100-lap Late Model Stock Car feature of the Goodyear Tire 300 at Franklin County Speedway on Saturday night.

The win was Sigmon's second in two tries this season, and it expanded his lead in the points standings. Last year, Sigmon finished second in points, but never recorded a victory.

Sigmon set a track record in qualifying, circling the .375-mile oval in 14.12 seconds, and he started the race on the inside pole. Wilson began on the outside pole and collided with Sigmon on turn 2 of the opening lap.

Wilson hit the retaining wall on the rebound and was finished for the night.

"Dicky and I wanted a position, and we both may have been running a little bit too hot," Sigmon said. "Dicky knows I didn't intentionally hit him. I'm not that kind of driver. . . . But I was a little bit cautious after that opening lap."

Lawhorn used the yellow-flag opportunity to seize the lead, which he held until Sigmon regained it on lap 67.

Lawhorn's vehicle gave him some difficulty in the final laps, as he faded to fifth. Harvey Harrison and Randy Arrington placed second and third, respectively.

Last year's Mini Stock points champion Tommy Dean notched his first win of the 1993 season, overtaking second-place finisher and last week's winner Steve Lam halfway through their 25-lap battle. Steve Lynch passed John Hall late in the race to finish third.

Phillip VanDerVeer and Freddie Goff finished 1-2 for the second consecutive week in the Street Stock 25-lap race. VanDerVeer posted a Street Stock track record in qualifying with a lap time of 15.25 seconds. Rocky Mount's Ed Farris placed third in his 1993 debut.

Like last week, Leon Moles won the 25-lap Pure Stock race. Red Hartman and R.W. Lawhorne placed second and third, respectively.

Gordon Wingfield again was the winner in the Rookie competition, overtaking front-runner Chuck Floyd on lap 21. Floyd hit the wall on turn 4 after checking his mirror to see where Wingfield was. Steve Hurley was second, and Jimmy Wilson, Dicky's son, placed third.

Dean Sutphin prevailed in the Any Car nightcap, outrunning Rob Newman (second) and John Bell (third). - Staff report
