The Hokies (23-9 overall, 5-4 in the Metro) scored seven runs in the fifth inning to break a 4-4 tie. The inning included an RBI double from designated hitter David Fitt and a two-run home run by Dalton.
Tech added five runs in the eighth inning, including a solo homer by Dalton and a three-run homer by catcher Denny Hedspeth.
Fitt and third baseman Bo Durkac each had three hits, and first baseman Ken Nonamaker had three hits and three RBI.
Ron Preston (4-3) earned the win for Tech; reliever Doug Cox (3-1) took the loss for the 49ers (16-18, 3-5).

At Lexington, VMI led 3-1 after the first inning, but could muster only four more hits as Appalachian State (12-23, 7-10) cruised to a 10-3 Southern Conference victory. Warren Williams hit a two-run home run for the Keydets (16-22, 5-12) in the first inning.
At Ferrum, Jerold Smith hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning and the third-ranked Panthers beat 13th-ranked North Carolina Wesleyan 7-4 in Dixie Conference baseball. Ferrum's Billy Wagner had 12 strikeouts in 5 innings and Keith Mayhew finished for the save. Ferrum (18-6) finished its conference schedule with a 9-3 record, guaranteed for at least a tie for first. N.C. Wesleyan is 17-4 and 6-3.
At Radford, two big innings, six RBI from sophomore left fielder Duane Filchner and nine Winthrop errors added up to a 20-4 Big South Conference victory for Radford at Dedmon Center Park. The Highlanders won two of the three games of the weekend series against the league-leading Eagles (9-8, 22-22). Sixth-place Radford (8-7, 19-12) has won eight of its past 11 games. The nine errors set a Winthrop record. Filchner, who was 5-for-5, put Radford ahead for good when he drove in Rob Amos for a 3-2 lead in the second inning. Filchner was 8-for-13 with nine RBI in the series.
Terri-Lee Fielder scored seven goals as second-ranked William Smith defeated No. 7 Washington and Lee 17-8 in a women's lacrosse match in Geneva, N.Y. Lisa Dowling had four goals for the Generals (9-2), and Lindsay Coleman had two.
Virginia Tech shot a 314 Sunday for a 932 total and finished ninth in the 20-team field at the Firestone Intercollegiate golf tournament in Akron, Ohio. Kent had a 309 and finished 11 shots ahead of Marshall at 902 for the victory. No team broke 300 Sunday. Kevin Kraft of Kent won the individual title with a final-round 77 and 218 total. Three golfers were five strokes back. Tech's Brian Sharp shot a 77 for a 228 total, tied for 13th. Tom Grazziano and Clayton Friend each had a 78 for Tech, and Sean Farrell and Lewis Conner had 81s. Tech plays next weekend at the Cavalier Classic in Charlottesville.
At Rocky Mounty, N.C., Georgia Tech's David Duval shot a 5-under-par 67 Sunday to win the individual title in the ACC golf championships and pace the Yellow Jackets to the team title. Duval finished at 206 to hold off Nicky Goetz of Clemson by four shots on the par-72, 7,122-yard Northgreen Country Club course. Georgia Tech had a team total of 853, Clemson was second at 858 and Wake Forest was third at 868. Duke, North Carolina State and Virginia tied at 879. North Carolina finished at 887, Florida State 895 and Maryland 921.
Ferrum's Kristen Hilton won the No. 6 singles title and the Panthers placed fourth in the team competition at the Dixie Conference women's tennis championships. Hilton defeated Gail Jones of Christopher Newport 6-2, 6-3. The Shipbuilders won the team title with 40 points, followed by Methodist (38), Averett (16), Ferrum (12) and Greensboro (6).
Virginia Tech swept a softball doubleheader from Emory & Henry, winning 13-4 in the first game and 13-0 in the second. In the first game, April Young, who played at Northside High School, went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Shelly Keffler of Craig County was 3-for-3 with four RBI. In the second game, Tech's Jessica Frohm went 3-for-4 - a single, a double and a three-run homer - with six RBI.
Ferrum pitcher Shelly Bowles was named the Dixie Conference player of the year, the first time a Panthers player has earned the award. Bowles was named to the conference first team along with teammate Pam Smythers, a first baseman. On the second team for Ferrum were outfielders Lisa Pendleton and Missy Spradlin and designated hitter RobenSutphen. The Panthers, which finished their season at 12-10, lost to North Carolina Wesleyan in the semifinal round of the conference tournament held at Ferrum. Catcher Betsy Forbes and outfielder Katie Chapman were named to the all-tournament team. Christopher Newport was the champion.
