ROANOKE HAWKS 2ND IN AAU 17-UNDER TOURNAMENT

The Roanoke Hawks finished second in the AAU 17-under boys' state basketball tournament in Richmond, losing the championship game 93-86 to Boo Williams Gold of Hampton. Both teams advance to the national tournament at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C., on July 16-23.

Derrick Hines led Roanoke in the final with 17 points, and Jemare Crump and Curtis Staples had 16 each. Staples had 21 points and Crump added 14 to lead the Hawks' 70-67 semifinals victory over Prince William earlier Sunday.

Roanoke opened the tournament on Thursday by defeating Central Virginia 91-52 behind Mark Byington's 16 points. Saturday morning, the Hawks defeated Prince William Silver 92-35, led by Shannon Taylor and Crump had 16 points each. Saturday night, the Hawks defeated Boo Williams Silver of Hampton 83-63 behind Staples' 25 points.

Staunton, Glenvar-Salem and the Roanoke Hawks finished 1-2-3 in the 18-team Southwest Region state AAU 13-and-under basketball tournament over the weekend at Salem High School and Andrew Lewis Middle School. Each earned a berth in the state tournament April 23-25 at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Glenvar-Salem defeated the Roanoke Hawks 54-50 in the semifinals then lost 65-46 to Staunton in Sunday's championship game. The Roanoke Hawks defeated Franklin County 60-40 for third place.

Kelli Newcomb, a sophomore at Franklin County High School, qualified for the U.S. Gymnastics Federation national championships with a ninth-place all-around finish at the Region 7 championships in Reading, Pa. Newcomb, who competes in the level 9 senior division for the Roanoke Academy of Gymnastics, scored 36.875 points in the all-around.

Several Roanoke Valley high school athletes took home top-six finishes after Saturday's Volunteer Track Classic involving more than 900 participants from 15 states at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. John Huffman of Northside finished second in the shot put with a heave of 54 feet, 4 inches. For William Fleming, Dominick Millner was sixth in the long jump at 22-3 1/4 ; Clyde Lewis was third in the 400 meters in 49.46 seconds; Leroy Witt was third in the 200 meters in 22.36; and the boys' 4x100 relay team of Lewis, Witt, Garfield Martin and Ernest Harrington ran sixth in 44.0.

Gunnar Shogren won the Thunderr in Holyland race near Bedford in the final leg of the Virginia Mountain Bike Series to earn the expert class title in the inaugural event. Shogren, of Morgantown, W.Va., won all three races of the series. Rob Acciavatti placed second in all three races and second overall. The series had 197 racers in five divisions. The other winners: Alice Vernon, women's open; Bob Wright of Blacksburg, veteran; Michael Holk of Blacksburg, sport; and Marc Laboceetta, junior.

At Charlotte, N.C., Flip Groggins started from the pole position and led all 21 laps en route to a 13-second victory in the SCCA GT-1 class the Charlotte Speedway Spring Sprints. Groggins, of Fincastle, paced the 18-car field in an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme and leads the GT-1 division in points with 24.
