In a boys' track meet:
Kenny Lewis of Rockbridge County won the 100 and the 200 and was runner-up in two other events as the Wildcats beat James River and Parry McCluer in a boys' meet. Marty Early triple-jumped 44 feet, 1 inch for the Wildcats, who had 77 points. James River had 55 and Parry McCluer 29.
\ BASEBALL: Liberty's sophomore left-hander Johnny Cash tossed a no-hitter in his first varsity appearance as the Minutemen crushed guest Altavista 16-0 in a game stopped after five innings by the 15-run slaughter rule.
Cash struck out seven, walked three and did not allow a ball out of the infield. Greg Reynolds, Liberty's freshman third baseman, hit a grand slam off loser Mike McCorkle in the first and finished with six runs batted in. Catcher Curt Goff hit a two-run home run and Jerry Padgett was 3-for-3. The Minutemen are 3-2, 3-2; Altavista 1-6, 1-6.
Dan Ashwell, a Holy Cross right-hander, lost a perfect game when North Cross' Aaron Lange led off the seventh inning with a single but host Holy Cross went on to defeat the Raiders 6-1 in a Virginia Independent Conference game.
Ashwell ended with a two-hitter and seven strikeouts. Dan Shallock had three hits and scored a run for Holy Cross (6-1 overall, 3-0 in the VIC). All six runs surrendered by North Cross (4-6, 4-4) were unearned.
At Radford, Gary Wiggins' RBI single in the seventh inning lifted William Byrd to a 5-4 non-district victory over winless Radford. Chris Carr had a two-run homer for Byrd.
At Wytheville, George Wythe scored 10 runs in the third inning to take the lead for good as the Maroons defeated Patrick Henry 16-14. Matt Barnes had five RBI for the Maroons (3-4) and pitcher Jason Otey came on in the fourth to earn the win. For the Patriots, Jason Delp hit a two-run homer in the third inning.
\ SOFTBALL: Timberlake Christian's Angie Coleman had two hits and scored two runs in a 12-6 Blue Ridge Conference victory over host Roanoke Valley Christian, which committed 15 errors. Timberlake's Stephanie Webb had a two-run triple. RVC is 0-2 overall and in the conference.
Michelle Hemp and Tracy Shaffer were a combined 6-for-8 with seven RBI as Alleghany thumped Rockbridge County 17-7 in the first game of a doubleheader on the Mountaineers' field. Fourteen girls had 19 hits in four innings in Alleghany's 28-7 victory in the nightcap. Alleghany improved 3-3 overall, 2-1 in the district.
\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Vinton, William Byrd outshot Alleghany 60-2 and rolled to an 18-0 win in a Blue Ridge District match. Twelve players scored goals for Byrd (4-0). Michael Berry led the Terriers with three goals.
At Daleville, Ted Hardin scored the game-winning goal at 1:24 of the second overtime, lifting Lord Botetourt to a 2-1 win over Salem in a Blue Ridge District match. Kris Keeton also scored for the Cavaliers (5-2 overall, 4-1 district). Owen Woodward scored for Salem (3-4, 2-2).
