BUCS WIN ON 10TH-INNING HOMER

Designated hitter Joe Calder hit a three-run home run in the top of the 10th inning that lifted the Salem Buccaneers to an 8-6 victory Monday over the Wilmington Blue Rocks in Carolina League baseball.

The home run was the first at the new Blue Rocks stadium and came off reliever Chris Eddy, who entered the game with a 0.00 ERA and two saves in four innings of work.

Marty Neff led off the 10th for Salem (5-6) with a single against Jeff Smith and advanced to second on a groundout by Michael Brown. Eddy came in and walked Ken Bonifay before Calder hit his homer to right field.

The Blue Rocks scored a run in the bottom of the 10th on pinch-hitter Pat Dando's RBI double with two out. Tom Smith walked to put the tying run on base, but Darren Burton flied to right to end the game. Wilmington (7-4) had a chance to win it in the ninth inning. Smith reached first on an error and advanced to second on a sacrifice fly. But Salem left-hander Jim Martin struck out Michael Tucker and retired Gary Caraballo on a fly ball to left field.

The Bucs took advantage of five errors by the Blue Rocks, scoring three unearned runs to take a 5-2 lead after six innings.

The game was halted twice for 12 minutes in the third and fifth innings when the lights behind home plate went out.
