LANGE BREAKS UP PERFECT GAME, BUT NORTH CROSS FALLS

Dan Ashwell, a Holy Cross right-hander, lost a perfect game when North Cross' Aaron Lange led off the seventh inning with a single, but the host Gaels went on to defeat the Raiders 6-1 in a Virginia Independent Conference high school baseball game Monday.

Ashwell ended with a two-hitter and seven strikeouts. Dan Shallock had three hits and scored a run for Holy Cross (6-1 overall, 3-0 in the conference). All six runs surrendered by North Cross (4-6, 4-4) were unearned.

Cash struck out seven and walked three and did not allow a ball out of the infield. Greg Reynolds, Liberty's freshman third baseman, hit a grand slam off loser Mike McCorkle in the first and finished with six runs batted in. The Minutemen are 3-2, 3-2; Altavista 1-6, 1-6.
