FIRE BREAKS OUT ON SAND MOUNTAIN

Firefighters from five departments and the state forestry service were battling a forest fire Monday night on Sand Mountain in Wythe County, a dispatcher said.

The fire began around 7 p.m., shortly after some area residents reported loss of electricity and cable service, a dispatcher said.

By 8:45, firefighters were still battling the blaze, which apparently had broken into three sections, the dispatcher said. Sand Mountain is in the center of the county, just outside Wytheville.
