The teen-ager was arrested over the weekend and charged with murder and use of a firearm in connection with the death of 29-year-old Ivory F. Williams.
The youth, who was not identified because of his age, became the 11th teen-ager in Roanoke to be charged with murder in the past three years.
Police have said Williams was shot at least five times in the chest, torso, leg and forehead with a small-caliber weapon.
Several passing motorists spotted him lying face-down on the sidewalk of the 2400 block of Centre Avenue, adjacent to the Lansdowne housing project, at 2:42 a.m. March 24. When police arrived, they were told that two men had been seen fleeing the area.
After several weeks of investigation, police on Friday issued petitions for the 17-year-old's arrest.
He was apprehended Saturday on the 1600 block of Rorer Avenue by vice officers who were "working drug-related matters," police said.
