Louis Farrakhan and Felix Mendelssohn are an unlikely pair. But for a while, the fiery black leader accused of being anti-Semitic and the grandson of a Jewish philosopher were in harmony.

Farrakhan, who studied violin as a youngster, took part over the weekend in "Gateways," a Winston-Salem, N.C., festival organized to celebrate black musicians' roles in the world of classical music. On Saturday night, he played the violin for Mendelssohn's famous Violin Concerto at Reynolds Auditorium before about 300 people.

Crown Prince Naruhito, heir to Japan's Chrysanthemum throne, will marry Masako Owada in a traditional rite on June 9, the Imperial Household Agency said Monday.

The wedding date - expected to be a national holiday - was decided by a 13-member wedding committee, the agency's Motokazu Nomura said. The wedding rite will be held at one of three shrines within the Imperial Palace.

Is singer Mariah Carey happy at Sony Music? She must be - she's engaged to marry Tommy Mottola, the president of Sony Music. The couple announced their wedding plans Friday in New York. The ceremony is set for June 5. A spokesman says the superstar is "preparing for a fairy tale wedding that every girl dreams about."

Linda M. Fiedler of Meadows of Dan is a finalist in the ninth annual American Quilter's Society Show and Contest to be held Thursday-Sunday in Paducah, Ky.

The top three quilts will become part of the permanent collection of the Museum of the American Quilter's Society in Paducah.
