OBIT MILLS, KATHRYN S. ("KATE")

MILLS, KATHRYN S. ("Kate"), 95, of Boones Mill, died Sunday, April 18, 1993, at Franklin Health Care Center. She was the widow of Walter F. Mills. "Miss Kate" as she was affectionately known by the community, had a long and distinguished career in education. Following her graduation from Radford College and further studies at the University of Virginia, she taught school in Franklin County for 49 years, retiring in 1969. In addition to her classroom teaching, she taught music lessons for many years in her home. "Miss Kate" was also active in her church and community, having been involved in the following: She was pianist at the Boones Mill United Methodist Church, organist at the Boones Mill Christian Church for 25 years, and again more recently a member of the choir of the Boones Mill United Methodist Church. "Miss Kate" was a former member of the Boones Mill Town Council, a past president of the Boones Mill Garden Club, and a member of the former Wednesday Morning Service Club. She was also a member and Past Worthy Matron of the Carrie Lee Chapter No. 108, Order of the Eastern Star. Having no children of her own, she felt as though her students were her children and she was honored by them on June 14, 1987 with a "Miss Kate Day". Survivors include three nieces, Evelyn Hardy, Roanoke, Sarah Lynn Eames, Boones Mill, Ann Miles, Pennsylvania; two nephews, Billy Sink, Roanoke, Dan Sink, Richmond. Funeral services will be conducted at Flora Funeral Chapel, 2 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. Ralph J. Wimmer officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Flora Funeral Service, where a memorial service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. by the Carrie Lee Chapter No. 108, O.E.S. The family suggests memorials be made to the Building Fund of Boones Mill United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 288, Boones Mill, Va. 24065.
