PIONEERS EDGE GALAX 5-4

Tracy Collins scored the winning run in the fourth inning on a single by David Phelps, giving Fort Chiswell a 5-4 baseball victory over Galax in a Mountain Empire District game on Tuesday at Max Meadows.

Junior Ricky Helvey (1-0) earned the win for the Pioneers (1-2) while B.W. Hill picked up a save. Helvey, who pitched six innings, gave up four hits.

In other baseball:

At Buchanan, Keith Bryant struck out 11 and pitched a five-hitter, and James River got a balanced offensive attack as the Knights handled Parry McCluer 11-6. Jody Stegger had three RBI, Chico Tolley had two RBI and three runs, Troy Thompson had two doubles and three runs, and David Hall knocked in two with two hits for James River (2-3). For the Blues (1-5), Nathan Floyd hit a three-run homer.

At New Castle, Tim Carroll went 3-for-4 with a grand slam, a double, five RBI and three stolen bases as Glenvar defeated host Craig County 16-3 in a Pioneer District contest.

At Lexington, David Hall struck out 12 batters as Alleghany (9-0) rolled past Rockbridge County 16-4 in a Blue Ridge District game. The Wildcats (5-2) committed 12 errors.

At Shawsville, Leon Trail, Ben Basham and Mark Akres combined for six hits and seven RBI as the Shawnees blew out Rocky Gap 12-0 in a Mountain Empire District game.

At Staunton, David Cummings was 3-for-4 and Brian Shinault hit a two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to lift Alleghany to a 5-2 victory over Riverheads on Monday.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Martin Mayerchek and Nikola Janjic scored two goals each as Rockbridge County defeated James River 5-2.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: At Martinsville, Salem and Martinsville played to a 2-2 tie. The Bulldogs took a 2-0 halftime lead on goals by Beth Kirby and Leighton Kirby. Salem rallied with two second-half goals by Karen Eggers.

\ BOYS' LACROSSE: At Lexington, Robert Worrell and Cole Atkins each scored five goals as Rockbridge County wiped out Salem 18-1.

\ GIRLS' TRACK: At Laurel Park, Sandy Hudson won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles to lead Franklin County to a first-place finish in a Piedmont District track meet. The Eagles had 90 points to edge Laurel Park with 88. Martinsville had 55, Magna Vista 48 and Fieldale-Collinsville 28. Valenica Eggleston of Laurel Park won the 800 and high jump.
