W&L DOWNS TIGERS 17-6 IN LACROSSE

Wiemi Douoguih scored seven goals, including five in the first quarter, to lift 14th-ranked Washington and Lee to a 17-6 Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's lacrosse victory Tuesday over Hampden-Sydney.

The Generals (8-2 overall, 4-0 ODAC) jumped to a 7-0 first period lead and the Tigers never recovered. W&L dominated the game with 54 shots and 54 ground balls, while Hampden-Sydney (5-6, 2-3) managed only 23 shots and 51 ground balls.

At Salem, James Kammerman scored five goals as Roanoke blasted Limestone (S.C.) 21-6 in men's lacrosse. Brett Smith and J.J. Blatt each added three goals for the Maroons (8-2), ranked fourth in Division III.

Mark Hazlewood hit a sixth-inning grand slam and Taylor Rhodes added four hits as Hampden-Sydney snapped a three-game losing streak with a 14-2 baseball victory over Washington and Lee.

The Tigers pounded out 16 hits and scored in seven of eight innings. Marshall Melvin hit a home run for Hampden-Sydney and Brett Gauntlett scattered five hits and allowed only one unearned run in seven innings to earn the victory.

Bill Terry went 3-for-4 and belted a two-run home run to lead VMI to an 8-4 victory over Radford on Monday in Lexington.

Terry's shot over the left field wall highlighted a four-run second inning as the Keydets (17-22) rapped a dozen hits on the day. Merlin Ikenberry had a pair of doubles and pitched three innings of relief to earn his sixth save.

Alex Vermonsky went 3-for-4 and knocked in two runs for Radford (19-13).

At Williamsburg, Sammy Hudson shot a second-round 76 for a 149 total to win individual medalist honors and lead Methodist to the team title of the Dixie Conference golf tournament. The Monarchs finished at 305-300-605.

Ferrum was fourth (330-321-651) behind Greensboro (314-319-633) and Christopher Newport (312-333-645) on the par-72 Ford's Colony course. R.J. Weaver and J.J. Derman were Ferrum's top finishers at 162. Matt Jordan finished at 164, Stuart Smith at 165 and Jay Browning at 166.

Furman captured its first Southern Conference men's golf championship in five years by recording the second-largest margin of victory in league history. In the individual championship race, Nick Cifelli outdueled Furman teammate Brad Jones for the title.

The Paladins shot a 298 in the third round at the par 70 Raintree Country Club South Course for an 871 total. They were 32 strokes ahead of Georgia Southern and Tennessee-Chattanooga. VMI finished ninth with a 993 total.

Cifelli beat Jones by three strokes. He finished with a 72 for a three-round total of 2-over par 212.

Virginia Tech volleyball standout Lisa Pikalek and Virginia basketball player Dena Evans are two of 15 national finalists for a postseason scholarship award.

Finalists for the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics/Walt Disney Postgraduate Scholarship were chosen from 240 nominees from sports other than football.

Five winners will be chosen and each will receive a $5,000 grant to be used for postgraduate studies.
