At Max Meadows, Tracy Collins scored the winning run in the fourth inning on a single by David Phelps, giving Fort Chiswell a 5-4 victory over Galax in a Mountain Empire District game. Junior Ricky Helvey (1-0) earned the win for the Pioneers (1-2) while B.W. Hill picked up a save. Helvey, who pitched six innings, gave up four hits, walked one and struck out five.
At Floyd, Giles turned four hits and two errors into a six-run fourth inning on its way to an 11-1 win over the Buffaloes. Matt McGuire led the Spartans with two hits and four RBI, and Stevie Steele pitched a four-hitter, striking out six. Mike Hylton had two of Floyd's four hits.
At New Castle, Tim Carroll went 3-for-4 with a grand slam, a double, five RBI and three stolen bases as Glenvar defeated host Craig County 16-3 in a Pioneer District contest. The Highlanders (1-4-1) earned only two of their runs, as the Rockets (1-7) committed eight errors.
At Shawsville, Leon Trail, Ben Basham and Mark Akres combined for six hits and seven RBI as the Shawnees blew out Rocky Gap 12-0 in a Mountain Empire District game. Pitchers Drew Smith and Tony Maxey teamed on the shutout. Shawsville is 6-2, 1-1; Rocky Gap is 0-4, 0-3.
At Auburn, Brett Mosley drove in five runs and Auburn committed five errors as Narrows whacked the Eagles 11-2. Sean Harris pitched the win for the Green Wave.
At Bedford, Jerry Padgett drove in three runs to power Liberty to a 5-2 win over Buckingham. Jeremiah Hunt pitched a four-hitter, striking out six, and Stu Young went 2-for-4 for the Minutemen (4-2).
At Tazewell, Bobby Brown had three hits and two RBI, and Travis Roop hit two homers as the Bulldogs defeated Christiansburg 7-2. For the Demons, Brock Whitlock hit a triple and scored a run, and Charlie Shrader had a run-scoring hit.
\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Blacksburg, Chris Evans scored 20 minutes into the second half on an assist by Steve Cherry as Blacksburg handed Northside its first loss of the season, 1-0. Goalkeeper Kevin Schug, who recorded his fifth shutout of the year for the Indians (6-0), stopped a North Cross penalty kick 10 minutes into the second half.
At Liberty, Joel Allen and Joey Coles each scored two goals and had two assists as the Minutemen defeated Rustburg 5-2 in a Seminole District match. Sean Horn scored one goal and assisted on another for Liberty (3-0, 3-0). Harold Chagas and Aitor Ascasso each scored for the Devils (2-3-1, 1-3-1).
At Christiansburg, Michael Berry scored two goals and Kevin Niday and Andy McCaskill each scored and had one assist as William Byrd blanked the Demons 4-0 in a non-conference match. The Terriers are 5-0. Christiansburg is 2-1-1.
At Rocky Mount, Keith Mattson scored two goals and Stephan Kugler, Bradley Lang each scored once as Franklin County downed William Fleming 4-1 in a Roanoke Valley District game. The Eagles are 3-0-1 overall, 1-1 in the district. The Colonels are 3-3, 0-3.
