PH WINS 3-2 IN BOYS' SOCCER

Cannon Helscher scored two goals, including the game-winner with 10 minutes remaining, as Patrick Henry edged Cave Spring 3-2 in a Roanoke Valley District boys' soccer game Tuesday.

After a scoreless tie at halftime, Helscher scored to give the Patriots (1-1-2) a 1-0 lead. Jim Garcerant and Bobby Warnick scored to give Cave Spring (3-2) a 2-1 lead, but Asheley Kinsey tied the score and Helscher won it. PH goalie McCoy Darby saved nine shots.

In other boys' soccer:

At Blacksburg, Chris Evans scored 20 minutes into the second half on an assist by Steve Cherry as Blacksburg handed Northside its first loss of the season, 1-0. Goalkeeper Kevin Schug, who recorded his fifth shutout for the Indians (6-0), stopped a North Cross penalty kick 10 minutes into the second half.

At Rocky Mount, Keith Mattson scored two goals as Franklin County downed William Fleming 4-1 in a Roanoke Valley District game.

Martin Mayerchek and Nikola Janjic scored two goals each as Rockbridge County defeated James River 5-2.

At Christiansburg, Michael Berry scored two goals as William Byrd blanked the Demons 4-0 in a non-conference match.

\ BASEBALL: At New Castle, Tim Carroll went 3-for-4 with a grand slam homer, a double, five RBI and three stolen bases as Glenvar defeated host Craig County 16-3 in a Pioneer District contest. The Highlanders (1-4-1) earned only two of their runs as the Rockets (1-7) committed eight errors.

At William Fleming, Jason Morris was 3-for-4 with three runs and two stolen bases as the Colonels (2-5) rolled past Roanoke Valley District foe Patrick Henry 10-4.

At Northside, Donnie Meador scored the winning run on a Northside error as Lord Botetourt (4-1, 1-0) defeated the Vikings 8-7 in a Blue Ridge District game. Ben Taylor hit a grand slam in the first inning and Jimmy Porter followed with a solo homer as the Vikings (4-2-1, 0-2) built a 5-0 lead.

At Buchanan, Keith Bryant struck out 11 and pitched a five-hitter as James River handled Parry McCluer 11-6. Jody Stegger had three RBI, Chico Tolley had two RBI and three runs, Troy Thompson had two doubles and three runs, and David Hall knocked in two with two hits for James River (2-3). For the Blues (1-5), Nathan Floyd hit a three-run homer.

At Salem, Kevin Saunders went 3-for-4 and pitched the win as William Byrd beat Salem 10-7.

\ SOFTBALL: At William Byrd, Rhonda Rankin pitched a no-hitter and belted a three-run homer in Salem's five-run fifth inning as the Spartans downed the Terriers 7-1.

Visiting North Cross jumped to a 10-3 lead and held on for a 14-12 win over Roanoke Valley Christian in a Blue Ridge Conference game. Blair Calvert drove in four runs for the Raiders (3-1) and Kim Humphries added a two-run triple.

At Lord Botetourt, the Cavaliers scored 16 runs in the first two innings on their way to a five-inning 22-4 rout of Northside. Botetourt batted around in both innings.

At Patrick Henry, Shelly King pitched a two-hitter and struck out 14 to guide the Patriots over William Fleming 5-3 in the Roanoke Valley District. King did not allow a hit after the first inning.

\ BOYS' LACROSSE: At Salem, Brian Cooley and Don Harless scored three goals each to lead Vinton to a 10-2 win over Cave Spring. Goalie Kirk Lancaster made 10 saves for Vinton, the club team from William Byrd High School.
