FEMINISM DIDN'T CAUSE WORLD'S WOES

IN RESPONSE to John Barnhart's March 21 letter to the editor regarding feminism:

Perhaps he should study what led to the feminist movement in the first place. Women are still struggling (even in democratic countries) for rights that many men take for granted. They have had to fight for the right to hold office, vote, control money, attain employment or seek an education.

The feminist movement didn't bring on the world's woes. There are many factors leading to increased divorce rates, and homosexuality has existed throughout history. And women were treated as sex objects and property well before the dawn of feminism.

I am 31 years old and have grown up witnessing the changing roles of women and men. These changes have brought hard choices and uncertainty, along with the good, but change is inevitable. I don't believe most women want to emasculate men. I feel that they want men to respect their desire to realize their full potential and not deny them choices because they are female. Isn't that the type of freedom men want for themselves? REBECCA J. DUFF ROANOKE
