GUNMAN FIRES ON POST OFFICE, WOUNDS MAIL CLERK

A postal clerk was wounded when a man fired a semiautomatic rifle from a window in his home across U.S. 1 from the Dumfries Post Office, police said.

Lewis Turner, 45, was hit in the upper right arm about 8:50 a.m. Tuesday as he was gathering mail from two collection boxes outside the post office, police said.

Turner, of Dale City, was treated at Potomac Hospital.

Stanley Slupkowski, 46, walked to the post office and turned himself in as soon as police arrived, authorities said. Police said they seized the semiautomatic rifle in his home.

Slupkowski was charged with malicious wounding and illegal use of a firearm. He was in the Prince William County jail Wednesday on $10,000 bond. A court hearing was set for May 21. - Associated Press
