Trent has been coaching at Byrd since 1978 and has won many titles, including the state championship in 1982. He also wrestled at Byrd and was a member of the state championship teams in 1973 and 1974 when he was a 132-pound state champion.
Five Roanoke Metro coaches were honored as the top coaches in their respective districts. The awards went to: Paul Barrell of Wilson Middle School, Roanoke City Middle Schools; David Schuyler of Northside Junior High, Roanoke County Middle Schools; Roger Lovern, Salem High, Blue Ridge District; Kris Kahila, Franklin County, Roanoke Valley District; and Rod Corl, Botetourt Intermediate, Middle School League.
The three other coaches honored are Mike Craft, Parry McCluer, Piedmont District; Mark Gammon, Patrick County, Piedmont District; and Dean Underwood, Christiansburg, New River District.
The awards are based on 50 percent sportsmanship and 50 percent achievement and ability.
A special award also went to Ron Childress, former wrestler, coach and official, who is now in wrestling promotions for his contributions to the sport. All awards were made at the recent annual banquet of the association.
Dr. Larry Hall is the association commissioner. Serving with him on the executive board are Mike Winston, Rick Schilling; Stan Parker, Pete Ninton, and Childress. The association services 45 schools in the Roanoke Valley.
