AMATEUR RADIO LEAGUE HONORS ROANOKE CLUB

The Roanoke Valley Amateur Radio Club has been recognized as a "Special Service Club" by the American Radio Relay League, the national organization of amateur radio operators.

The Roanoke club, founded in 1932, was recognized for its participation in providing communication in emergency situations and for its community involvement, amateur radio preparation classes and new ham recruitment and training.

The club has 200 members and sponsors an annual radio convention that attracts amateur radio operators and computer hobbyists.

Amateur radio operators are licensed by the Federal Communications Commission to experiment with and operate radios on specific frequencies. They are known internationally for the assistance they render in relaying messages into and out of disaster-stricken areas.
