RELIGION BRIEFS

A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE for the estimated 6 million people killed by Hitler's orders before and during World War II is scheduled Sunday at Temple Emanuel, 1163 Persinger Road S.W.

A public reading of victims of the Holocaust will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. An ecumenical service, sponsored by the Roanoke Chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, the Jewish Community Council and a group from Hollins College, will be held at 3:30 p.m.

The service marks the 50th anniversary of an uprising in the Warsaw ghetto in which Jews sought unsuccessfully to escape from Nazi extermination policies. A candle-lighting ceremony and a dramatic reading by Jean Larson, accompanied by Victoria Bond at the organ, also will be part of the observance.

\ ETHICAL CHOICES: REFORMING THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM will be the theme of the Church Women United's May Fellowship Day program. The program will be at Westhampton Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 2515 Grandin Road S.W. on May 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

\ ROANOKE AREA MINISTRIES, an interfaith agency to help those needing day shelter, a hot noon meal and various emergency services is seeking volunteers to prepare food, serve meals and receive clients. The agency also needs food and equipment donations.

Meal help is especially needed on the first, third and fifth Fridays in May from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Call Susan Adams, coordinator, at 345-8850.

\ THE J. EUGENE YOUNG MASS CHOIR of Jerusalem Baptist Church, 1014 Norfolk Ave. S.W., will observe its sixth anniversary Sunday at 5 p.m. at the church. The Unified Voices for Christ, directed by Philip Price, will be presented in concert.

\ COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH has begun construction of an enlarged worship area that will cost about $500,000. The nave, which now seats 375, will be enlarged by 80 seats, and the organ will be relocated under the project, being carried out by R.L. Price contractors of Roanoke. The construction also will result in additional space for the music program and an area for youth activities.

During part of the construction, services will be held in the fellowship hall. The addition is expected to be finished by Labor Day. This is the fourth major building program undertaken at the church since it was organized about 35 years ago.

\ OUR LADY OF NAZARETH CATHOLIC CHURCH has reorganized its staff and will add three lay people beginning July 1. Lynne Lonnquist will direct the program in which converts are received into the church; Raina Lewis will supervise Christian formation and family life projects; and Daniel Keeley will become the minister of music. The Rev. Kenneth Stofft is pastor.

\ MARRIAGE, DIVORCE AND GRIEF will be the focus of three short courses scheduled on Wednesday nights, beginning Wednesday, at St. John's Episcopal Church, Elm Avenue and South Jefferson Street in downtown Roanoke. The classes begin at 7:30 and are free except for optional materials. The groups will continue through May 26.

Leaders for the marriage class will be Hildy Getz, Dr. and Mrs. Luther Beazley, Dr. and Mrs. Lucian Grove and Dr. George Luedke. Joan Boggess and Judy Freeman will coordinate the group on divorce. Harry Davis and Martha Hunter are leaders for the courses in grief recovery. Call 343-9341 for more information.

\ DEREK WILLIAM BOHON, who spent 22 months in the Philippines as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will speak on his experiences Sunday at 9 a.m. at the Cotton Hill Road Southwest congregation.

Bohon, a 1989 graduate of Cave Spring High School, learned the Tagalog language and participated in a rice harvest while on the island of Palawan.
